For most enterprises the shortlist is HighRadius, Esker, Serrala and Billtrust. All four automate cash application and collections; they differ in how far they reach before the invoice. Chaser suits smaller teams that mostly chase late payments. Teams already running AI agents on O2C steps can add Trail so those agents follow the written credit policy and customer terms.

What is order to cash automation?

Order to cash automation is software that takes a customer order through credit checks, invoicing, payment matching and collections, and stops only when a step breaks a rule or lacks the data to decide.

Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 guidance defines the process as “everything that happens in an organization from a customer places an order until the payment is received and settled with the invoice”. It notes the process is also called O2C or OTC learn.microsoft.com. Its July 2026 process catalog splits the work into sales policies, sales orders, receivables, credit and collections, and sales analysis learn.microsoft.com. The vendors below compete on the exceptions: orders on credit hold, payments nobody can identify, and customers who pay less than the invoice.

Which order to cash tools are worth a look?

HighRadius, Esker, Serrala, Billtrust and Chaser. For each we note one thing to test before you sign.

HighRadius

HighRadius says its O2C agents “analyze data to recommend data-driven decisions, streamline AR workflows, and automate routine tasks” highradius.com. Its deductions tooling is the most specific we found. Agents capture claims from portals and email and link backup documents, and a validity predictor scores which deductions are likely invalid highradius.com. That makes it a fit for teams whose queue is mostly deductions. Its cash application page describes AI matching blended with a human workforce highradius.com, so ask which exceptions end with a person.

Esker

Esker lists modules from customer inquiries and order management through credit, invoicing, cash application, deductions and collections esker.com. It suits teams that want order entry in the same suite. Its AI claims are general, so ask for a demo on a held order or a disputed deduction.

Serrala

Serrala offers cloud, hybrid or SAP-embedded deployment and describes agentic AI for payment matching and collections prioritisation serrala.com. It fits SAP-centred finance teams. Its order-to-cash menu lists AR products, and we found no order-entry product there, so pre-invoice work stays in your ERP.

Billtrust

Billtrust runs invoicing, payments, credit, collections and cash application as one platform. In July 2026 it announced an MCP server so finance teams can query live invoice-to-cash data from Claude and Copilot billtrust.com. Its AI page says governance includes human review of sensitive actions billtrust.com. Ask whether that connector can act or only answer.

Chaser

Chaser automates payment chasing and cash flow forecasting and connects to Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, Business Central and SAP chaserhq.com. It publishes prices, which we found for none of the other four. Dispute handling sits in Care, a service add-on staffed by an AR specialist chaserhq.com. We found no mention of cash application or deductions on its pages.

What Trail adds to agents that work O2C exceptions

Trail gives agents your written O2C policy as approved rules and leaves the suite and ERP in place. Its wholesale and distribution page, the one trailhq.com solution page that mentions order-to-cash, says to “Drop in the order-to-cash SOP, work instructions, allocation policy or customer terms your team already works from”. The page also says every learned rule “is explained and traced to the exact text it came from” trailhq.com. Its example turns an order management SOP clause into “No current license? Hold the order and request it.”

The finance page takes a credit policy as input. It shows the rule “If requested terms exceed net-60 and exposure is over the credit limit, require written CFO approval before quoting” trailhq.com. Agent Builder builds the agent from a PDF or DOCX SOP, and nothing goes live until your team approves it trailhq.com. In the Rule Engine, rules carry a named approver and timestamp, prior versions are kept so past decisions replay trailhq.com, and an agent “can report. It cannot approve” trailhq.com. We cover that pattern in approved rules for finance and operations agents.

Where it is not the fit: cash application shows up only as a process tile, and we found no mention of lockbox handling on its pages, so keep a cash application engine. The order and collections agents on its pages are mock-ups, there is no O2C walkthrough, and the developer docs page is a placeholder trailhq.com. It suits teams whose agents (SAP Joule, Agentforce, Copilot, Claude or their own) already run O2C steps. The AP version of the pattern is in AP 3-way match automation from an SOP.

Where does an order to cash run stop?

At four points, each governed by a policy someone wrote down.

An order to cash run and the exception at each step

Step list
  1. Credit checkDynamics 365 compares the sales order against blocking rules such as days overdue, payment terms, an expired credit limit and share of credit used. A match puts the order on hold; exclusion rules can override it, and a person releases it with a reason code.
  2. Cash applicationOracle Receivables searches transaction, sales order, purchase order and other reference numbers in a fixed order. If nothing matches and AutoCash fails, the receipt is Unapplied and someone applies it by hand.
  3. DeductionsA customer owed a rebate can deduct it from the payment. The deduction is matched to an open credit, split, denied or written off.
  4. CollectionsCollectors work aged balances, waive or reverse fees, write off balances and process returned (NSF) payments.

Oracle can close an invoice and post an adjustment for an underpaid receipt, and its setup example adjusts underpayments of less than 100 docs.oracle.com. Who chose 100, and for which customers, is a policy decision the agent has to know about.

What should you check before choosing an O2C tool?

Start where your exceptions queue, then ask each vendor the same questions.

Questions to put to any O2C vendor

Checklist
  • Which exceptions close without a person?Ask per type: credit hold, unapplied receipt, underpayment, deduction. Then ask which of them an auto-resolve claim covers.
  • Where does each threshold live?Underpayment tolerances, credit limits and dunning stages are policy. Ask who sets them and how a change is approved.
  • Can the agent cite its reason?A released hold or a denied deduction should point to the clause or customer term behind it, so an auditor can check it later.
  • What happens to unwritten terms?A side agreement in email or an old master agreement can decide a deduction. Ask how the tool reads them.
  • Run your own monthHave each vendor process a month of your remittances and deductions; count what reaches a person.

How we chose and checked these order to cash tools

On 2026-10-19 we read Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Oracle Receivables documentation for the process (SAP’s page blocked our requests), then each vendor’s own O2C, AI and pricing pages. We chose the five vendors AI engines named most often for this question in our October 2026 scan. For each we looked for four things: which O2C steps it covers, what its AI does with an exception, any control or approval wording, and whether agents can be built from written procedures. Silence on a vendor’s pages is reported as no mention found. We ran no hands-on trials of any product, Trail included, and used no vendor customer stories. Trail publishes this page.

Frequently asked questions

Best order to cash automation software?

It depends on where your exceptions pile up. HighRadius and Esker cover the widest span of the process, Esker including order capture; Serrala suits SAP shops that want cash application and collections embedded; Billtrust centres on invoicing, payments and cash application; Chaser fits smaller teams chasing overdue invoices. If you already run agents, add a layer that gives them your written credit and order policy as approved rules.

What is the difference between order to cash and accounts receivable automation?

Accounts receivable automation covers the back half: invoicing, cash application, collections and disputes. Order to cash also includes credit checks and order entry before the invoice exists. We found no order-entry product on Serrala's, Billtrust's or Chaser's pages, while Esker covers order management and HighRadius lists blocked order release.

Which O2C exceptions still need a person?

Credit holds with more than one reason, payments with no usable remittance, and deductions whose validity depends on a contract or an email. Serrala's own July 2026 blog makes the point: rebate terms in old master agreements and pricing exceptions that were never written down remain a human problem, because an agent can only reason over what it can read.

How much does order to cash automation software cost?

Most enterprise O2C vendors quote rather than publish prices; HighRadius describes subscription-based pricing without figures. Chaser publishes plans, starting at £199 per month on Compact for businesses under £4 million in annual revenue. Ask enterprise vendors whether price scales with invoice volume, entities or modules.

How do you measure whether O2C automation is working?

Count the exceptions that still reach a person each month, by type, and how often a reviewer reverses the agent. Use a month of your own data from before go-live as the baseline.
